Got a call from General Tire and it was bad news. He had an estimate and was able to locate all the parts needed for the front brake job and front wheel bearings. The total estimate with parts and labor came to over $2400.00. This was a bit more (by about two thousand dollars) than we were prepared to spend at the moment. $750 of this amount would be in labor and the remaining would be in parts. The parts were as follows: inner bearings, outer bearings, oil seals, brake shoes, brake drum, spring in brake, and the air chamber. I told them to hold off a bit while I consulted with Mary to see what our options were. First I looked into towing the coach up to our storage yard in Sacramento. I called Good Sam to see if our roadside assistance plan could help but they told us that if it was already at a shop it did not qualify as emergency roadside assistance and even still they would just tow it to the nearest repair facility. I then called a few big rig tow companies and on my fifth one I found a tow company that had a "low boy" flat bed they could transport it with. The quote to take it to Sacramento was $950.00 - at that price I would rather just have the work done and drive it. Mary did a little research on her own and found a storage yard at the marina in Redwood City. We decided to have the guys at Redwood Tire just put it back together and we would just drive it a mile and put it in storage until we could deal with it later. I called General Tire and asked how much it would be to just put it back together in a condition that we would be able to drive it a couple of miles to the storage yard.
We got the quote from General Tire and it would be $550.00 to replace the one brake shoe and oil seal and put it back together. Mary and I went to the storage yard and reserved our spot and paid the deposit to store the coach. I then called Denny at General Tire to go ahead and put it back together he said they would not have the parts back until Thursday and could have the coach ready for us on Friday. I asked what time they closed on Friday so we could move it to the storage yard after work, before we headed up to Sacramento for the weekend and they said they would be open until 5:30.
We arrived at General Tire in Redwood City at 5:30 after fighting the Friday rush hour traffic to pickup pay for and move the coach to the marina. When we got there the coach was still up on jack stands and they did not have it ready. Denny was a bit embarrassed and apologetic that they forgot to get to it and had not even begun to put it back together. This does not score very good points with their level of service. They re-assured s that they would get the coach ready by Monday. We will plan on moving it on Tuesday since I have school Monday night.
